Amy Schumer’s work as an actress and comedian is remarkable. The comedian is worth $25 million. However, nothing is as good as it seems.

The star recently opened up about her Lyme disease. The comedian was diagnosed with the disease over the summer of 2020, but she may have had it for way longer.

Alongside a throwback photo of herself, Amy wrote on Instagram, “My first ever fishing pole. Anyone get LYME this summer? I got it, and I’m on doxycycline, I have maybe had it for years. Any advice? Can you have a glass of wine or 2 on it?”

Then she added, “I know to stay out of the sun. I’m also taking these herbs from cape cod called Lyme-2. Please comment or text me on my number in my bio. I also want to say that I feel good and am excited to get rid of it.”

Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected blackleg tick. The 40-year-old did not offer insight into her symptoms. Nevertheless, the typical ones include headache, joint pain, fatigue, and skin rash, according to The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Health Issues

This isn’t the first time Amy has opened up about her health issues. She recently got candid with Access Hollywood about the physically and emotionally “tough experience” of going through in vitro fertilization (IVF) to get her two-year-old son Gene, a sibling.

Amy revealed, “It was really hard on my body and emotionally… We’re grateful that we got one normal embryo, but we’re going to put that on hold until after the pandemic.”

Weight Loss

The comedian recently sat down with plus-size model Hunter McGrady and talked about body positivity and the constant media narratives surrounding women’s bodies.

Amy revealed that she has friends who are gorgeous actresses but are worried about aging. With Hunter, they acknowledge Hollywood’s power to make women stress over their age and weight.

For Amy, weight is the least important thing about a person. Unfortunately, the press has made everything about females’ weight, like Adele’s case. Her weight loss became a bigger topic than her talent.

“For me, I was diagnosed with Lyme earlier this year, and I definitely lost a couple of LBs. But people’s reaction is, ‘you’re losing weight,” said Amy.

Many people have been congratulating her for her weight loss without knowing the health problems behind her new figure. She added, “I don’t know if I lose or gain weight, and now that the pandemic is going on, you don’t have one pair of jeans that keeps you honest, so I don’t even know where those jeans are.”

Amy also highlighted that the focus on weight it’s just from the media and “it’s so negative.”

Expecting Amy

The stand-up comedian is recognized for always showing herself authentically and honestly. As proof of it, she released the documentary Expecting Amy to share the ugly side of pregnancy with HBO. Amy wanted to showcase her journey going into motherhood, sharing her less-than-glamorous pregnancy. The three-episode series was shot in part by Amy and her husband Chris, a chef, on their cell phones.

Amy has also partnered with Tampax to empower women to be educated about their bodies, especially women of color.

Body Image Issues

During an interview to promote her collaboration with Goodwill, the comedian revealed some very emotional details about her own body image struggles.

The partnership with Goodwill clothing stores is inspired by Amy Schumer’s own hopes to empower women through fashion, and she did just that during her interview on The Today Show, where she also broke down in tears.

Amy revealed that “It’s been a struggle for me my whole life, especially just being in the entertainment industry, standing on a stage in front of people.” She went on to say that sometimes her insecurities really did get the best of her, adding, “And sometimes I would just want to throw in the towel and be like, ‘I’m not gonna go do stand-up tonight.'”

However, Amy was able to admit that she gained a lot of confidence after filming her box office success, Trainwreck, thanks to her stylist for the film, Leesa Evans. She said, “Leesa had given me this gift of showing me how to dress and feel good,” and now she’s hoping to do the same for women all over the world. There’s no doubt that Amy’s goal is to make other women feel confident.

A Brilliant Comedian

Amy was born into a wealthy family, but her father went bankrupt when she was nine years young. She studied theatre at University, worked as a waitress and bartender before getting into comedy, and made it onto the 5th season of Last Comic Standing, which she referred to as her big break.

She officially started doing comedy on June 1st, 2014, at Gotham Comedy Club. From there, Amy continued to work on stand-up specials for Comedy Central. A few years later, the network decided to greenlight her own show, Inside Amy Schumer.

Through her comedy, she reflects on the issues that women have to deal with daily, including how society expects them to look and act.
