Reading Time: 4 minutesThe SirtFood Diet (don’t be confused with stir fry here) was written by Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten, in an effort to get people to believe they can lose weight by reading and following the book. It was published in January of 2016, so it is rather new to the diet scene. Matten and Goggins claim to be experts in nutritional medicine, and they claim by eating “Sirt” foods you will lose weight, have energy and receive glowing health. Coffee, Kale, and Dark Chocolate are foods that are said to activate sirtuins, and allow an opening for weight loss in the body.*If you are unfamiliar with what sirtuins means, it is explained byNCBIlike this,Sirtuin genes function as anti-aging genes in yeast, Caenorhabditis elegans, and Drosophila. The NAD requirement for sirtuin function indicates a link between aging and metabolism, and a boost in sirtuin activity may in part explain how calorie restriction extends life span.”*

So what does the book have to do with all of this information about sirtuin? The program will tell you a main list of “Sirt Foods” which is really what you will care about:

  • Bird’s-eye chili
  • Buckwheat
  • Capers
  • Celery
  • Cocoa
  • Coffee
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Green Tea
  • Kale
  • Lovage
  • Medjool Dates
  • Parsley
  • Red Chicory
  • Red Onion
  • Red Wine
  • Rocket
  • Soy
  • Strawberries
  • Turmeric
  • Walnuts

The book has no official website to turn to when looking for advice, or to ask a question. Instead, the authors give you links to their personal websites to see all of the testimonials, case studies, and chatter about their diet book. To contact either author, you must do so on their social media pages, which by the way look like absolute ghost towns.

Bottom line is that this program is going to detox your body for seven days, and then you will either have to keep eating sirt foods to see weight come off, or you will be gaining it all back.* This diet is not very sustainable in the fact that you are drinking two of your meals for a majority of the time, which is not sustainable long term for most people. Here are some authentic and real customer voices regarding the Sirt Diet:

Lizzy* said, “I do not feel like this is an achievable diet if you are feeding a hungry family surrounded by food! Also you will need a juicer and I cannot afford one so boom, this is no good for me. It is not sustainable to eat or cook like this in the long term. The recipes are too complex and rich in expensive ingredients.” She went onto say that the diet might work for celebrities but that it will not work for ordinary people. Some of the ingredients that were required to purchase were very expensive and they did not work as instructed in the recipes. AKA- Matcha Powder.

Beelady* said, “Well, this isn’t for ordinary people. It is a diet for those who chase a dream and are prepared to suffer for it. It does not resemble normal eating in any way and I think it is unsustainable. It is extreme eating. The green juice is absolutely revolting and I poured mine down the sink. I disliked throwing all the extracted fibre on the compost heat, thinking I would have enjoyed eating all the juice ingredients in their whole state and that it would have been healthier anyway. It is VERY expensive.” She continued and said that the matcha tea is very expensive and it tastes horrible, as well as being extremely hard to find. Forget the juice and starvation and stick to just the Sirt food for a better experience.

As you read above, this diet is going to be extremely hard to follow for many reasons, due to the high cost in unique ingredients and the amount of time you will be spending juicing and preparing your meals. If you do not like matcha or kale then you will really find this diet hard to follow as many of the recipes in the Sirt Food Diet include both of these ingredients. Many people just flat out hated the way the drinks tasted and could not even start the diet to begin with. There are two phases involved in the Sirt Diet Program:

Phase 1: This phase limits you to 1,000 calories per day for one week and two of your meals will be green drinks rich in Sirt Foods like kale, celery, parsley, green tea, and lemon. You are able to have one meal per day also rich in Sirt foods such as turkey, chicken, kale, or buckwheat noodles.*

Phase 2: During this phase you are allowed to up your caloric intake to 1,500 calories and you are still drinking the two green drinks, but you are now allowed to add another meal to the day making it two meals and two drinks. This phase can last up to 14 days.*

This diet is most definitely not for everyone, and it requires a lot of funds (aside from purchasing the book) as well as time to get through the preparation for the meals. The book includes many recipes about halfway through your reading, but a lot of the ingredients are so unique that customers found them hard to find at the grocery store, as well as stomach down initially as the flavors were so new. Overall, this diet is backed by science as there are many case studies shown, but the idea of seeing success from this diet alone for the average person is a long shot.
