The 20 foods that turn on your “skinny gene”
- January 29, 2021
You might have heard of the Sirtfood Plan before – especially since it was reported singer Adele lost 50lbs following the plan – but do you know what it actually is?
The eating plan will change the way you do healthy eating. It may sound like a non-user-friendly name, but it’s one you’ll be hearing about a lot.
Because the ‘Sirt’ in Sirtfoods is shorthand for the sirtuin genes, a group of genes nicknamed the ‘skinny genes’ that work, frankly, like magic.
Eating these foods, say the creators of the plan, nutritionists Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten, turns on these genes and “mimics the effects of calorie restriction, fasting and exercise”. It activates a recycling process in the body, “that clears out the cellular debris and clutter which accumulates over time and causes ill health and loss of vitality,” write the authors.
These foods contain high levels of plant chemicals called polyphenols, which are thought to switch on the Sirtuin genes and so provoke their super-healthy benefits.
The top 20 Sirtfoods include red wine, cocoa (dark chocolate!) and coffee. Buckwheat is the main carb on the list, and such was the success of the first book – The Sirtfood Diet – when it launched last year, that health food shops sold out of it, and buckwheat noodle manufacturer Clearspring had to double its production.
