Michael wrote to his followers on his @michaelmosley_official account: “This is how I make purple sauerkraut.”
The TV presenter and inventor of the 5:2 diet and the Fast 800 diet, explained why he loves the health food so much.
“It is a type of fermented that is packed full of healthy prebiotics and probiotics, delicious, cheap and really easy to make.”
Dr Michael Mosley’s sauerkraut recipe
“Slice up a red cabbage, two onions and some fennel, and tip in a bowl.
“Add a teaspoon of coriander seeds and black peppercorns, and 1.5 tablespoons of salt.
“Mix with your hands for a few minutes and allow to rest for 30 minutes to an hour.
“Then cram it into a sealable jar, using blunt end of a rolling pin, and add a couple of tablespoons of filtered water.
“Leave in a moderately cool place (18-20 c) for a few days and it should start to ferment, making gas.
“Open the lid and give the surface a press with your rolling pin to squeeze out the gas.
“Do this every other day for a week to 10 days and it should be ready to put in the fridge.
“I love it with scrambled eggs in the morning.
“There are around four grams of carbs per 100g of sauerkraut.”

Does sauerkraut help with weight loss?
A study in Korea looked at 21 patients who ate fresh and old kimchi (another pickled cabbage product), switching between the two.
Both types of kimchi led to a reduction in weight and waist circumference.
However, the fermented kimchi caused the most significant improvements.
Another weight loss expert suggested a diet plan with yoghurt for breakfast and salmon for dinner.
Clarissa is a nutritionist and a certified member of The British Association of Nutritionists.
For breakfast she suggested a bowl of live yogurt, a handful of berries, eight to 10 raw nuts, and a small cupped hand size of low sugar granola or muesli.
For dinner, the expert suggested fillet of salmon cooked in the oven served with steamed broccoli and half a sweet potato cooked in wedges.
