The keto diet is a low carb, high fat diet thought to burn the body’s stores of fat away, helping with slimming. It changes the body’s metabolic system, but can be difficult to achieve properly.

Calories eaten on the diet must be at least 70 percent from fat to make the plan effective and to prompt ketosis.

Dr Mosley explained: “Your body treats sugar in the body like money in the pocket, while it treats fat more like money in the bank account. It’s very reluctant to go there.

“Now what you want to do is is obviously burn fat, but to do that you’re going to have to deplete the sugar stores.”

This means the body goes into ketosis and creates ketones from fat to run the body and the brain.

One recipe detailed in the programme was a portobello mushroom pizza.

It can be a tasty low carb version of the Italian treat.

How do you make it? First you’ll need portobello mushrooms.

Then the key is to layer marinara sauce, shredded mozzarella and other low carb toppings on top, like ham.

Michael Mosley also advised a fairly extreme 800 calorie diet to kickstart the diet process.

However, all participants had extensive health checks. Do not attempt an extreme diet without speaking to your doctor.

He co-authored the research study for Oxford University, which found that those following a diet of 800 calories a day for eight weeks lost an average of 9.5kg – which is almost one and a half stone.

Dr Mosley explained that some people lost more, and some lost less, but all of the people in study “massively improved their metabolic health”.

Dr Moseley talked through what he calls “the three Fs”, which are three factors that are crucial for those hoping to lose weight.

The first is fluids – dieters should drink plenty of water as not only will it help you feel fuller, but for every gram of sugar you lose, you lose three grams of water.
