Can You Lose Fat By Not Eating (and is it healthy?)
- February 20, 2021
Are you thinking about not eating in order to lose weight?
Are you wondering if you can lose weight by not eating?
The answer is YES, you can absolutely lose weight by not eating. In fact, it’s almost impossible to not lose weight without eating.
I think we’ve all tried “eating less” or “not eating” to lose weight as a method of weight loss at least once in our lives. The problem is, and I’m sure you already know this, that this way of losing weight is not sustainable long term. And for most people, it will be incredibly hard to do.
But in the short term, not eating can help you lose a lot of weight.
So it really depends on your goals and what you want. I want to talk more about not eating and how it works for weight loss so you can decide if this is the method you want to use to shed some pounds.
Why not eating is great for weight loss
Your body needs energy to work. You get energy from calories. If you don’t eat any food, you are not taking in any calories and therefore your body will need to get energy from somewhere else. The ONLY place it can get energy from is the energy that exists in your body.
You have temporary energy that is meant to be used in between meals and when you haven’t had food for awhile (like when you’re sleeping). And you also have a permanent energy storage tank in your body, which is all the fat on your body.
Your body will first use up all the temporary energy (called glycogen and this is stored in your muscles and liver) before it will tap into your actual fat cells. Your body stores around 2000 calories of temporary energy. So you can use up this temporary energy pretty quickly by not eating. It would take a day or two perhaps. After all this temporary glycogen is gone, then you will actually begin to lose body fat.
The role of body fat
fat on your body is meant for times when there is no food available – like when you voluntarily don’t eat. So burning fat is a NATURAL thing your body can go through – though it does not prefer it. By not eating, you’re not really doing anything different than Cave people back in the day when they went weeks without food. It’s really the same thing.
So you need to understand that NOT EATING is something that can naturally happen with your body. We are evolutionarily constructed to be okay without food for a reasonably extended period of time. You won’t die if you don’t eat for a few days…. though you might feel like it since your body is so incredibly accustomed to eating all the time.
For a short term fat loss goal, not eating will likely be the best weight loss plan
Honestly, if you are just looking to lose like 5 – 10 pounds maybe, going a few days or a week without food COULD get you this result.
Now, not EVERYONE is able to go without food for this long. Some of you may have health issues that make fasting for an extended period of time very difficult or dangerous. However, if you are a generally healthy person overall and don’t have too many complicating issues, you SHOULD be able to go a week or so without food with little to no detriment to your health.
I’m not saying this will be an easy process. What I’m saying is there likely will not be any adverse affects to your health if you go without food for a week or so. AGAIN, I have to reiterate that for little to no adverse affects to happen, you need to be a generally healthy person overall and have all your organs and other bodily functions working pretty well. Low energy and light headed in small doses are reasonable side effects that are “bad.” However, they’re pretty typical symptoms of not eating. Only you can can decide how bad they are. If they’re just small side effects you’re probably okay. If it’s affecting you at work lets say, then that’s obviously an issue you need to look at more closely.
Having said that, you could be a perfectly healthy human being and not be able to go an extended period of time without food too. Everyone is different. Not everybody can handle going that amount of time without eating. Some people get too nauseated, light headed, and just don’t have enough energy to get through it. If you try not eating and this is how you feel, you should probably stop.
Should you not eat for weight loss?
For a short term thing, you could do it. You can try for a few days to see how your body handles it.
Long term, I don’t recommend not eating for too long of a time. First of all, it will be incredibly difficult on your body because it’s used to eating very often. However, people do longer term fasts regularly as part of maintaining their health. Fasting (which is not eating) for an extended period of time, say 3-7 days, is when your body and digestive system gets to relax and detox. It’s actually extremely healthy for your body to go through a fast every few months or so – which is why many people practice it.
If you’re just looking to drop as much weight as you can quickly, then not eating is the fastest way to get there. Your body will immediately tap into your existing available temporary energy and fat cells for energy to run your body. You’re taking no calories in and it’s all calories out. This is a massive caloric deficit.
Long term, not eating consistently is bad. Very bad. You’re basically being anorexic which is obviously horrendous for your health. Again, not eating is only for a SHORT TERM fat loss solution. And you will lose weight quickly in a short period of time.
If you want a long term fat loss solution…
If you want to lose weight and keep it off LONG TERM, then not eating is not the solution. It’s the worst idea actually.
What you need is a diet that works well for weight loss.
There are lots of “diets” that will make you lose weight. In fact, most diets “work”.
But you want the BEST diet for weight loss, right? You want to lose weight the fastest and be healthy at the same time, right?
Well, there is a diet that is excellent for both health and weight loss…
It’s called a ketogenic diet. And it’s exploding in popularity because it works.
It’s unconventional because it’s not too mainstream yet, but more and more people are learning about it and doing it – because simply put, it has been shown to be incredibly effective for weight loss.
